Teräsbetoni frontman J. Ahola on representing Finland at Eurovision 2008 & more

Sunday, April 13, 2008

This article is a featured article. It is considered one of the best works of the Wikinews community. See Wikinews:Featured articles for more information.

Teräsbetoni means “steel-reinforced concrete”, and is also the name of a Finnish heavy metal band formed in 2002. Their music, which centres on an honourable warrior lifestyle or on metal itself, quickly became popular in 2003 on the Internet, resulting in a petition by fans being sent to several record labels demanding a recording deal. In late 2004 the band signed to Warner Music Finland, and the following year debut single Taivas lyö tulta rose to number one in the Finnish charts, and debut album Metallitotuus hit number two and went platinum, and has now sold about 47,000 copies.

The band, who sing exclusively in Finnish, have just released their third album, Myrskyntuoja. The lead single on this album is Missä miehet ratsastaa, which Teräsbetoni decided to enter in the Finnish selections for the 2008 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, where it was selected to go on to the semi-final in Belgrade, Serbia as Finland’s representative this year. Although Finland has seen limited success in the contest, their only victory was with a comparable group. In 2006 hard rock band Lordi – whose monster costumes and pyrotechnic displays are famed – achieved a record 292 points in the final with Hard Rock Hallelujah.

Teräsbetoni’s frontman, vocalist and bass guitarist Jarkko Ahola’s fame extends beyond the band he heads. He also features in Finnish symphonic power metal cover supergroup Northern Kings, alongside Marco Hietala of Nightwish and Tarot, Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica and Juha-Pekka Leppäluoto of Charon.

Wikinews was able to conduct an exclusive interview with Jarkko Ahola to discuss these various achievements. This interview is now published below for the first time.

The Fight Continues For Prochoice Advocacies

Submitted by: Jenny Allen

Murder is a black and white case. However, place that in the context of abortion, and the whole country starts expressing opposing opinions about the evils of abortion and prochoice sentiments for women s rights. Just last month, a new case jeopardizing the status of abortion in the US states hit the news desks. Kermit Gosnell was convicted of first-degree murder. The charges against him were three infanticides and an unintentional murder of a grown woman. If you are following the news, most especially online, there is no way you could have missed this issue.

The abortion physician was convicted, his abortion clinics closed. After this example of abortion totally gone wrong, what might be the fate of the abortion clinics in Charlottesville VA and in other US states? Several states have been adding restrictions to their respective abortion laws yearly. The Court has also acted on this particular incident and included abortion on the list of cases they will address. What happens to abortion rights now? Will anti-abortion activists finally be silenced with victory? Will abortion rights advocates concede in defeat? No group is a sure winner or loser except the group of women directly affected by this issue.

Before deciding to directly abolish the abortion practice in the US, the Court and our legislators need to congregate and carefully decide if this move will really benefit women. We cannot deny that women have been making the most out of their abortion rights. When you check the statistics, thousands of women still undergo abortion every year. Nowadays though, there are lesser abortion practices due to the increased use of contraceptives among women. Various reports have concluded that because of added restrictions to the abortion law, many abortion clinics throughout the country will be forced to close their practice–when other states even only have a single abortion clinic.

One practical solution for abortion providers is to prove the stigma brought by the Kermit Gosnell case wrong. They have to improve their facilities and services to a level that even the restrictions on the abortion law cannot find fault in them. Other than improved services, their medical professionals should also be legally accredited by the state to practice abortion services. If these abortion providers really believe that women should be given that right to choose for their own, they have no choice but to rise to the occasion.

The Gosnell incident is a sure roadblock to the progression of abortion in our society. However, prochoice advocates are driven enough to let this dampen their prochoice advocacies regarding abortion. As mentioned above, they will just have to work harder to prove to the state that they can operate and comply to abortion regulations even if the state adds more restriction every year. Better abortion clinics have to prove that they are just that–better. Legitimate abortion clinics will not have to worry about any additional restrictions because they operate within the limits of the law at the first place. They just have to perform better.

Evergrande real estate firm makes missed September bond payment, avoids default

Evergrande real estate firm makes missed September bond payment, avoids default
October 31st, 2021 | Uncategorized |

Saturday, October 23, 2021

China property giant Evergrande Group wired USD83.5 million in interest owed in an offshore bond from September 23 on Thursday, temporarily averting default, according to a Reuters source and Chinese newspaper The Securities Times.

The wire to a Citibank fiduciary account following a 30-day grace period came after assurances by various members of the Chinese government, Reuters reported. At a Beijing forum Wednesday, Chinese Vice Premier Liu He described the risks as controllable, and chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission Yi Huiman said that while authorities needed to curb excessive debt more broadly by “improv[ing] the effectiveness of the constraint mechanism on debt financing”, the matter would be dealt with properly.

Once China’s top real estate developer, Evergrande had accumulated approximately USD305 billion in liabilities, two per cent of the Chinese gross national product, after “dwindling resources” cut its value by 80%, according to Reuters. September data revealed Chinese home sales by value fell by nearly 17% year-on-year, according to The Guardian, and fears over its default led to a slowdown in China’s third quarter GDP growth to a year low of 4.9%. Two sale negotiations with rival developers Hopson Development and Yuexiu, valued at USD2.6 billion and USD1.7 billion, respectively, were suspended, reportedly due to a lack of consent by the government of Guangdong province currently overseeing Evergrande’s restructuring.

News of Evergrande’s remittance caused its shares to rise by as much as 7.8% this morning after a two-week pause in trading for the anticipated sale of 50.1% in Evergrande Property Services Group, and offering some reprieve for bondholders, according to Reuters. Portfolio manager at GaoTeng Global Asset Management James Wong, interviewed by The Guardian, called the news “a positive surprise”, adding “[i]f Evergrande pays this time, I don’t see why it won’t pay the next time.” Jun Rong Yeap for IG Asia pte., interviewed by Bloomberg, said the report “overturned” the narrative “that Evergrande will face difficulty in securing cash ahead”.

Further missed payments are due October 29 and November 11 after similar 30-day grace periods; including yesterday’s USD83.5 million, nearly USD280 million is owed to bondholders.

Stocks have been down for many major Chinese developers: Reuters Wednesday reported year-to-date stock prices fell 87.8% for Sinic Holdings, currently in Fitch Ratings’ ‘restricted default’ after failing to make an October 18 bond payment valued, according to The Guardian, at USD246 million; 80.2% for Evergrande itself; 78.3% for E-House, 58.5% for Fantasia Holdings and 54.6% for Kaisa Group, which defaulted in 2015 and had bonds reach record lows.

Estimates of the Chinese real estate market’s size range from 16 to 25% of the Chinese gross domestic product, according to The Guardian. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aim to transform the country’s economy from one of debt-fuelled “inflated” growth to one of improved “quality and returns” included imposing regulations on developers that limited their capacity to borrow. A Guardian comment piece from economist George Magnus published on October 15 made reference to China’s “ghost cities” and “rampant credit creation” that has given rise to high vacancy rates and the “financialisaton of housing”.

Haiti’s banks reopen

Haiti’s banks reopen

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Banks in Haiti have reopened for the first time since the earthquake. The central bank of Haiti reopened last Thursday and privately-owned banks opened Saturday. Private banks are allowing withdrawals of up to 2,500 Haitian gourdes (equivalent to about US$63 or £29). Bank officials were prepared for large crowds with extra security personnel. Officials say providing money to the disaster-struck people is essential to get Haiti back on its feet.

As Haitians flood into the banks and transfer offices, transactions are taking up to 10 hours. Haitian officials are unable to determine the amount of money flowing in from relatives outside the earthquake-ravaged country.

At one money transfer office on Tuesday, as many as 300 people lined up. Haitian Natasha George told The New York Times that she had been waiting in line since 3 a.m.

At another office on Monday, Louise Patricia Saint Rose had been sleeping in the street and been waiting for three days for money from her husband is in the United States.

“They are stealing from us and I need it badly,” Saint Rose said. “My daughter was injured. We’re sleeping in the street — I need to buy water and food.”

According to the Voice of America the earthquake killed an estimated 110,000 people, however according to the Haitian minister, 150,000 are dead.

As many customers have lost identification documents in the earthquake, bank officials are having trouble ensuring eligibility. They are relying on personal details and information that would be known to the customer only.

Citibank, a New York bank, lost its locations due to the earthquake’s devastation. Gladys Coupet, a Citi of Haiti official, said, “No institution or individual in Haiti escaped unscathed by the tragic events of January 12th. We at Citi were no exception, having lost five of our dear employees.”

What’s The Buzz About Cohesive Implants Vs. Silicone…}

What’s the buzz about cohesive implants vs. silicone…

What distinguishes cohesive implants is that the silicone gel is firmer, essentially a soft solid. If a cohesive implant is cut in half, there is no gross movement of gel, and the implant maintains its shape.

The way these are made is that the company uses more “crosslinker” in the making of the implant. The ingredients are the same, but with more crosslinker added, it makes the gel firmer.Unfortunately, given the recent media attention to cohesive implants, many are using the term to describe “regular” silicone gel implants. Technically, they are correct; all silicone gel is cohesive to some degree. But the term cohesive has always meant form stability, and when patients ask for cohesive gel, it is because they are looking for an implant with those particular characteristics of durability and shape retention. Hopefully, the terminology will be clarified in the coming years.Silicone or cohesive implants. Which did you use and why???

Millions of old New Zealand coins still to be handed in">
Millions of old New Zealand coins still to be handed in

On November 1, 2006 the old five, ten, twenty and fifty cent coins will be illegal tender, but the Reserve Bank of New Zealand says there are still at least 100 million still to be returned.

According to the Reserve Bank, most of the old coins have been lost in drains or buried in rubbish. “We think there is still another 100 million sitting around in people’s homes,” Brian Lang, currency manger for the Reserve Bank, said.

Lang said: “So far, just over 280 million coins have been returned, but there are more out there. Since 1967 the Reserve Bank has issued more than a billion of the old ‘silver’ coins. So if you don’t want to be stuck with loads of old coin – there’s never been a better time to empty your coin jars, sweep the car glove box and rummage behind the couch cushions.”

The coins still awaiting to be handed in, by either spending them, taking them to a bank or donating them to charity, are estimated to be worth between NZ$5 million and $50 million.

“A last-minute burst of publicity may convince people to bring the coins in. It’s a bit of a hassle though. Human nature being what it is, people just don’t care,” Lang said. The Karori Wildlife Sanctuary located in Wellington say that they have collected over $9,000 in old coins. Sanctuary spokesman, Alan Dicks said: “The campaign was particularly fitting because the old coins depicted tuataras and kiwis, both of which can be found living at the sanctuary. The money will go towards supporting general ecological restoration of the sanctuary. We want to get over ten grand, but the more the better.”

Lang said: “Though the coins will no longer be legal tender, banks will continue to exchange them until at least the end of the year,” and the Reserve Bank will always exchange them. “We are still getting people coming in with two-dollar notes,” Lang added.

How To Get Fast And Competent License Services

October 19th, 2021 | Dinnerware |

byadmin

Have you ever visited a place to get licensing services and thought that you never, ever, want to go back? Was the wait time obnoxiously long, only to have to deal with rude and incompetent workers? If you had to endure the typical long wait times and terrible customer care, then it is understandable that you do not want to go back to a place like that for those services. However, you must know that there are places that pride themselves on making your experience an enjoyable one. When you need vehicle licenses and title transactions you must research to find a place that can help you in the friendliest and most efficient manner. Here are some ways to know that you have found the best place to handle your needs.

Getting the Proper Documentation

When you need to obtain documentation that deals with titles and licenses you must make sure that you only deal with places that have the authority to provide those documents. They must be a certified agent for your state. If they have this requirement, then they are a legitimate company that can complete all of your transactions.

Convenience

When you have found a place that has the power to provide you with the paperwork you require, there are further steps you must consider. You also must make sure that they can process all of your documentation quickly and proficiently. It is also nice to know that you have found a place that can handle not only licenses but also title transactions such as title transfers and other documentation. Even though many places offer these services, not all places provide them in a great environment. It is always best to get greeted with friendly and efficient workers whose main goal is customer satisfaction. Getting the documents you need is only half the battle; obtaining them in a quick and stress-free environment makes your process complete and successful.

Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau">
Wikinews interviews World Wide Web co-inventor Robert Cailliau

October 19th, 2021 | Uncategorized |

Thursday, August 16, 2007

The name Robert Cailliau may not ring a bell to the general public, but his invention is the reason why you are reading this: Dr. Cailliau together with his colleague Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, making the internet accessible so it could grow from an academic tool to a mass communication medium. Last January Dr. Cailliau retired from CERN, the European particle physics lab where the WWW emerged.

Wikinews offered the engineer a virtual beer from his native country Belgium, and conducted an e-mail interview with him (which started about three weeks ago) about the history and the future of the web and his life and work.

Wikinews: At the start of this interview, we would like to offer you a fresh pint on a terrace, but since this is an e-mail interview, we will limit ourselves to a virtual beer, which you can enjoy here.

Robert Cailliau: Yes, I myself once (at the 2nd international WWW Conference, Chicago) said that there is no such thing as a virtual beer: people will still want to sit together. Anyway, here we go.
