Stolen minibus recovered 35 years after theft

Friday, November 6, 2009

A 1965 Volkswagen minibus that was stolen in 1974 has been recovered by customs agents in Los Angeles. The vintage minibus was in pristine condition, valued at $25,000, and was found during a routine inspection of a shipping container scheduled for departure to The Netherlands. A routine computer database search on its vehicle identification number flagged it as having been stolen from a vehicle upholstery shop in Spokane, Washington on July 12, 1974. A custom restoration business in Arizona was attempting to deliver it to overseas clients last month when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

“Pretty amazing, isn’t it?”

The theft appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau database, which is used by border authorities and contains all stolen vehicle records. Most police databases remove unsolved vehicle thefts after five years.

The California Highway Patrol does not suspect the restorer of wrongdoing, according to investigating officer Mike Maleta. Possession of the vehicle apparently changed several times. Police in Spokane have not yet located the rightful owner, whose identity has not been released to the press. Maleta hopes that a trail of registration documents and interviews will uncover the thief.

“[The restoration firm owner is] a victim himself. He was an innocent purchaser…”

The Allstate insurance company paid $2500 shortly after the theft occurred and wants to take possession of the vintage minibus. Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet expects that after the necessary paperwork is processed the firm will sell it at auction.

Finding A Rental Car In Sydney, Australia

Finding a Rental Car in Sydney, Australia

by

Mark j Smith

Sydney is a popular place for people to visit when you come to Australia. The city, however, is large and it `s no longer can walk everywhere and see everything. A rental car is the perfect solution, but many people worry about how and where to find one with minimum hassle.

Having a rental car from scratch is a useful way to go. You will find that `s easier to get to and from your hotel and there` s no business trying to find a taxi rental is being charged by the minute.

Advantages of renting a car

There are many reasons to rent a car, whether traveling for business or pleasure.

– Freedom to take off and see the sights you want to view, even if there `s no bus tour.

– Easier to get around trying to find buses and trains.

– If you are staying with friends or family, you don `t need your liking if you see something you have no interest in.

– Travel to small towns outside Sydney, or simply enjoy a stroll along the shore, `sa beautiful sight.

– Arrive at meetings on time.

– Rental cars are much cheaper than taxis everywhere.

Get a car at the airport

Like any metropolitan city, Sydney does not need to take taxis to and from the airport. You can easily get taxis from some of the areas of the airport with the help of airport supervisors who ensure that the flow of passengers in taxis terminals is very smooth. There are also supervisors who help organize special taxis for passengers with special needs like those with babies or in wheelchairs.

When picking up your vehicle as soon as you get off the plane, you can load your bags and go without any hassles. There `s no waiting for a taxi or trying to find a hotel shuttle that will take you where you need to go, mixing your luggage with other people` s. Instead, you can put everything in your vehicle and avoid any place you choose, even stopping to eat before going to hotel, if you will, and unpack at your leisure.

Another advantage is lower costs. If you go to a rental car drop off at a different location, you `d have to find a taxi to take you to the airport, or, if you choose to leave the car at the airport, you` d probably pay a fee for this. When picking up your car at the airport, you can return to it without additional charges.

Tips for customizing a rental car

It is always a good idea to call ahead and reserve a vehicle. Sydney Airport can be fairly complete and no `s no guarantee that the car you want to be there when you arrive, so I have to stop before reaching side is best. If for some reason, are out of the vehicle you requested, you should get updated without charge.

Check your reservation the day you leave Australia, just to be safe. It also helps to check online to find out where the car rental company is to go there and once you have got your luggage.

Rental cars are very useful move, especially if you’re used to driving and are not accustomed to public transport in Sydney. This can save you some money on taxis, too.

Runaway train causes chaos on London Underground">
Runaway train causes chaos on London Underground

April 13th, 2022 | Uncategorized |

Monday, August 16, 2010

A London Underground engineering train ran away and travelled four miles on the Underground’s Northern Line early on Friday morning, resulting in part of the Northern Line, which carries 500,000 passengers daily, being closed for much of the day. The runaway train apparently had an engineering defect.

The London Underground, also known as the Tube, reported that the engineering train had been working on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line when it broke down at 5.25 a.m. BST (0425 UTC). It was attached to an out-of-service passenger train to be dragged northwards when, for reasons which are being investigated by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, it broke free near Archway station at 6.44 a.m. and started rolling southwards. The train ran through six stations before it was finally brought to a halt by a slight incline in the track at Warren Street at 6.57 a.m.

Passenger Tom Redfern, on the preceding train at Archway, described what happened to the BBC: “As soon as we pulled away the driver came on the tannoy and said, ‘There is an emergency, will everyone move towards the front of the train’. There was a ripple of panic. I went from half asleep to a big adrenaline rush. I thought, ‘Is this it?'”

The passenger train was rerouted onto the City Branch of the Northern Line, and bypassed all stations until Moorgate in an attempt to keep ahead of the runaway, while the runaway was routed down the Charing Cross Branch.

Mr Redfern said: “We went full speed. We knew the situation was dangerous because we were going fast. Even by the driver’s voice, we could tell it was serious.”

London Underground director Richard Parry said that at no time was the runaway closer than 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) to a passenger train. Service was suspended between Finchley Central and Archway, and between Camden Town and Kennington via Charing Cross, while investigations into the cause of the runaway took place.

Federal judge rejects hate crime plea in Arbery killing">
Federal judge rejects hate crime plea in Arbery killing

April 13th, 2022 | Uncategorized |

Thursday, February 3, 2022

On Monday, Judge Lisa Godbey Wood of the U.S. District Court in Brunswick, Georgia rejected a guilty plea from Travis McMichael after McMichael offered in court to plead guilty to federal hate crimes in the death of Ahmaud Arbery.

It is highly unusual for a U.S. judge to reject a plea agreement, which would waive McMichael’s right to appeal.

McMichael said he was willing to plead guilty to attacking Arbery out of racial animosity, which would make Arbery’s murder a hate crime. In the proposed plea deal, he would have spent the first 30 years of his sentence in a federal prison. After that, he would move to a Georgia state prison for the rest of his life. Per this deal, even if his state charges were overturned, McMichael would still spend many years in prison.

In court, federal prosecutors urged Judge Wood to accept the plea deal, but Arbery’s family asked her not to. The dead man’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, said that the men who killed her son did not deserve to choose their living conditions: “Granting these men their preferred choice of confinement would defeat me. It gives them one last chance to spit in my face.”

Prosecutors claimed they had talked with the victim’s family about the plea deal in advance, but lawyers for Cooper-Jones disagreed.

Judge Wood explained that Cooper-Jones’ statement was part of her decision, but her main reason was that she did not want to be held to the strict 30-year sentence agreed upon by prosecutors and McMichael’s lawyers.

Wood’s decision casts doubt on whether McMichael’s father, Gregory McMichael will also plead guilty as planned. Gregory McMichael also helped kill Arbery.

In February 2020, the McMichaels and a third man, William Bryan, chased Arbery, 25, in trucks as he jogged through their suburban Georgia neighborhood. Travis McMichael then fought with Arbery on foot and shot him to death. Bryan took cell phone video of the event, which later appeared on the Internet.

In November 2021, all three men were convicted of murder in Georgia’s Glynn County Superior Court. They were sentenced to life in prison, though only Bryan was granted the possibility of parole. The state of Georgia did not at that time have its own hate crime law, and prosecutors decided to charge the men on the federal level.

Jury selection for Travis McMichael’s federal hate crimes trial is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 7.

11 Tips For A Great Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour

April 10th, 2022 | Online Gambling |

By Keith Kravitz

Seeing the Grand Canyon by helicopter is the ultimate way to enjoy this fabulous National Park. The Canyon is 190 miles long and flying is the only way to seriously experience it to the max. Before you put on your headphones and prepare for lift-off, here are 11 tips that make sure you flight goes as planned:

#1. Book your tour in advance. Helicopter tours are insanely popular. Especially from Las Vegas, NV. Making advanced reservations guarantee that you fly on the day of your choice.

#2. Read the fine print. Understand the cancellation policy BEFORE you pay for your flight. It’s very difficult to cancel and get a full refund after the fact.

#3. Know for sure which Rim (South or West) you are going to see and what date you will at your destination (Las Vegas, Phoenix, Sedona) prior to making your Grand Canyon Helicopter tour reservation.

#4. Helicopter tours start at $200 per person.

#5. Try to book your tour in the morning. Doing so allows you to re-schedule if there’s bad weather afoot. It’s also when your flight will be the smoothest.

#6. Bring your “memory machines.” Cameras, camcorders, and cell phones. The views are spectacular. Helicopters are outfitted with 180-degree windows, giving you full canyon panoramas. Remember to charge your personal electronics the night before. Binoculars are also helpful.

#7 Confirm your reservation when you arrive at your destination. A simple phone call or email is all that’s required.

#8 Tip the pilot. They also serve as your guide and know the canyon like the back of their hand. Start between $20 to $30 (US currency) and use judgment from there.

#9. It’s impossible to enjoy your tour and videotape or photograph every moment of it.

#10. See if your tour company offers a video of your actual helicopter flight.

#11. Videos of the flight cost extra. They are not bundled into the price of your package.

Helicopters departing from the Las Vegas area reach the West Rim in 45 minutes. In addition to flying to the bottom (this is the only place where you can do it), you can bundle in pontoon boat ride down the Colorado River or admission to the Grand Canyon Skywalk, a glass bridge that extends 70 feet past the edge and lifts you 4,000 feet above the river. Top of the rim, check out the authentic Hualapai Indian Village. There’s also a free shuttle service that stop at select viewpoints. Key landmarks include Eagle Point, Guano Point, and Hualapai Ranch.

South Rim helicopter tours fly out of Grand Canyon Airport in Tusayan, AZ, which is located just 10 minutes from the Park’s main gate. There are no direct helicopter flights from Las Vegas. You have to take a quick airplane flight or a 5.5-hour bus ride then switch over to your helicopter. Flights last 30 minutes and fly from the Kaibab Plateau to the North Rim before turning back. Aircraft are not allowed to fly below the rim or land on the bottom.

Smart travelers know that helicopters are the only way to see as much of the Grand Canyon as possible in the shortest amount of time. Take a moment to peruse my 11 tips and you’ll be on your way to booking the helicopter tour of your dreams.
