US bombers to train in Australia

Saturday, November 19, 2005

In a joint agreement by Australia and the United States, the U.S. Air Force will begin regular strategic bomber aircraft training in the Northern Territory early next year. At the recent high-level AUSMIN talks between the U.S. and Australia it was announced that the strategic bomber training program would involve B-52 and B-1 bombers and the B-2 stealth aircraft.

Under the new arrangements aircraft would fly direct from the United States for bombing operations at the Delamere Air Weapons Range situated about 130km south-west of [[w:Katherine, Northern Territory|Katherine}} in the Northern Territory. Delamere is a 211,000ha bombing range used regularly by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for dropping live weapons. The Darwin RAAF base would also be available for the bombers to land and refuel if necessary. The planes will fly to the Northern Territory from the U.S. Pacific Island base of Guam.

As increase in digital music sales slows, record labels look to new ways to make money

Every September, the Apple iPod is redesigned. Last year saw the release of the iPod Nano 5th generation, bringing a video camera and a large range of colours to the Nano for the first time. But as Apple again prepares to unveil a redesigned product, the company has released their quarterly sales figures—and revealed that they have sold only 9m iPods for the quarter to June—the lowest number of sales since 2006, leading industry anylists to ponder whether the world’s most successful music device is in decline.

Such a drop in sales is not a problem for Apple, since the iPhone 4 and the iPad are selling in high numbers. But the number of people buying digital music players are concerning the music industry. Charles Arthur, technology editor of The Guardian, wrote that the decline in sales of MP3 players was a “problem” for record companies, saying that “digital music sales are only growing as fast as those of Apple’s devices – and as the stand-alone digital music player starts to die off, people may lose interest in buying songs from digital stores. The music industry had looked to the iPod to drive people to buy music in download form, whether from Apple’s iTunes music store, eMusic, Napster or from newer competitors such as Amazon.”

Mark Mulligan, a music and digital media analyst at Forrester Research, said in an interview that “at a time where we’re asking if digital is a replacement for the CD, as the CD was for vinyl, we should be starting to see a hockey-stick growth in download sales. Instead, we’re seeing a curve resembling that of a niche technology.” Alex Jacob, a spokesperson for the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which represents the worldwide music industry, agreed that there had been a fall in digital sales of music. “The digital download market is still growing,” they said. “But the percentage is less than a few years ago, though it’s now coming from a higher base.” Figures released earlier this year, Arthur wrote, “show that while CD sales fell by 12.7%, losing $1.6bn (£1bn)in value, digital downloads only grew by 9.2%, gaining less than $400m in value.”

Expectations that CDs would, in time, become extinct, replaced by digital downloads, have not come to light, Jacob confirmed. “Across the board, in terms of growth, digital isn’t making up for the fall in CD sales, though it is in certain countries, including the UK,” he said. Anylising the situation, Arthur suggested that “as iPod sales slow, digital music sales, which have been yoked to the device, are likely to slow too. The iPod has been the key driver: the IFPI’s figures show no appreciable digital download sales until 2004, the year Apple launched its iTunes music store internationally (it launched it in the US in April 2003). Since then, international digital music sales have climbed steadily, exactly in line with the total sales of iPods and iPhones.”

Nick Farrell, a TechEYE journalist, stated that the reason for the decline in music sales could be attributed to record companies’ continued reliance on Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, saying that they had considered him the “industry’s saviour”, and by having this mindset had forgotten “that the iPod is only for those who want their music on the run. What they should have been doing is working out how to get high quality music onto other formats, perhaps even HiFi before the iPlod fad died out.”

When Jobs negotiated a deal with record labels to ensure every track was sold for 99 cents, they considered this unimportant—the iPod was not a major source of revenue for the company. However, near the end of 2004, there was a boom in sales of the iPod, and the iTunes store suddenly began raking in more and more money. The record companies were irritated, now wanting to charge different amounts for old and new songs, and popular and less popular songs. “But there was no alternative outlet with which to threaten Apple, which gained an effective monopoly over the digital music player market, achieving a share of more than 70%” wrote Arthur. Some did attempt to challenge the iTunes store, but still none have succeeded. “Apple is now the largest single retailer of music in the US by volume, with a 25% share.”

The iTunes store now sells television shows and films, and the company has recently launced iBooks, a new e-book store. The App Store is hugely successful, with Apple earning $410m in two years soley from Apps, sales of which they get 30%. In two years, 5bn apps have been downloaded—while in seven years, 10bn songs have been purchased. Mulligan thinks that there is a reason for this—the quality of apps simply does not match up to a piece of music. “You can download a song from iTunes to your iPhone or iPad, but at the moment music in that form doesn’t play to the strengths of the device. Just playing a track isn’t enough.”

Adam Liversage, a spokesperson of the British Phonographic Industry, which represents the major UK record labels, notes that the rise of streaming services such as Spotify may be a culprit in the fall in music sales. Revenues from such companies added up to $800m in 2009. Arthur feels that “again, it doesn’t make up for the fall in CD sales, but increasingly it looks like nothing ever will; that the record business’s richest years are behind it. Yet there are still rays of hope. If Apple – and every other mobile phone maker – are moving to an app-based economy, where you pay to download games or timetables, why shouldn’t recording artists do the same?”

Well, apparently they are. British singer Peter Gabriel has released a ‘Full Moon Club’ app, which is updated every month with a new song. Arthur also notes that “the Canadian rock band Rush has an app, and the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor – who has been critical of the music industry for bureaucracy and inertia – released the band’s first app in April 2009.” It is thought that such a system will be an effective method to reduce online piracy—”apps tend to be tied to a particular handset or buyer, making them more difficult to pirate than a CD”, he says—and in the music industry, piracy is a very big problem. In 2008, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry estimated that 95% of downloads were illegitimate. If musicians can increase sales and decrease piracy, Robert says, it can only be a good thing.

“It’s early days for apps in the music business, but we are seeing labels and artists experimenting with it,” Jacob said. “You could see that apps could have a premium offering, or behind-the-scenes footage, or special offers on tickets. But I think it’s a bit premature to predict the death of the album.” Robert concluded by saying that it could be “premature to predict the death of the iPod just yet too – but it’s unlikely that even Steve Jobs will be able to produce anything that will revive it. And that means that little more than five years after the music industry thought it had found a saviour in the little device, it is having to look around again for a new stepping stone to growth – if, that is, one exists.”

How To Get The Best Electrical Supplies In Nyc

May 16th, 2022 | Cabling |

byAlma Abell

The demand for electrical hardware products is high especially in densely populated cities like New York. To meet the high demand, many people have set up hardware stores that offer the locals with the hardware products they need. This is a good thing but it also brings confusion especially when you want the best Electrical Supplies in NYC.

With so many stores to choose from, it is important to screen every store before deciding to deal with any. For starters, it is important to make a list of possible stores within your area. After doing this, you should look at the kind of electrical hardware items they have in their inventory. It is always advisable to buy from a store that has almost everything you need. This will help you avoid making several stops at different outlets looking for items that are not available in one store.

Depending on the volume of items you want to buy, you should consider the delivery services that a store can offer. Some products are bulky and when you place bulky orders, most reliable hardware stores will offer free delivery within a certain radius from their store. This is always an important incentive for many clients.

Other things that you may have to look at include the kind of workers at a hardware store. Sometimes the clients visiting hardware stores are not very conversant with what they want. Electrical Supplies in NYC vary and clients at times buy things on the advice of the dealers or technicians. For this reason, a reliable hardware store should also employ electrical technicians that can guide clients who may need technical help.

In some cases, the client may not even have an idea about the right product to buy for a certain task. With the best technicians working at a hardware store, such clients can always get the necessary advice. A number of stores also do electrical fittings and plumbing works. This only means you can get the items you need from such dealers as well as have them fitted. This is a good deal for many especially if they can also do repairs in the future. Clients at times look for customized products. A good store should be able to customize products for their clients.

Cyprus to charge five over 2005 plane crash that killed 121
May 14th, 2022 | Uncategorized |

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Cypriot prosecutors have announced that they intend to charge five people over the 2005 crash of Helios Airways Flight 522. The loss of the Boeing 737 killed all 121 people on board.

Attorney General Petros Clerides announced the plans today, but did not indicate who was to be charged or exactly what the offenses were.

“We came to the conclusion that, from the evidence gathered, a criminal prosecution is justified against several people whom we consider accountable for the plane crash,” he said at a press conference in Nicosia.

The unresponsive aircraft, supposed to be flying between Lanarca to Prague, entered Greek airspace where it was intercepted by two F-16 fighter jets on August 14, 2005.

The F-16 pilots reported the airliner’s pilots were slumped over the controls. After flying on autopilot for two hours the aircraft crashed near Athens despite the efforts of a flight attendant, who was training to become a pilot, to take control and save the jet.

The subsequent investigation discovered that the pilots failed to adequately monitor the pressurisation system. The plane lost cabin pressure and hypoxia caused the incapacitation of the passengers and flight crew. It is thought that the conscious flight attendant had used multiple crew oxygen cylinders to outlast the others on board. Investigators also believe that the equipment had been left in the wrong setting after testing by maintenance engineers and never checked before flight.

After failing to resuscitate the pilot-in-command, the trainee pilot turned off the autopilot and attempted an emergency landing at Athens International Airport, which the aircraft had been circling in a holding pattern awaiting human input. However, the aircraft ran out of fuel before reaching the runway.

Authorities in Belgium raid Church of Scientology

Saturday, April 12, 2008

According to reports, authorities in Belgium have seized documents, financial records and computer equipment from the local branch of the Church of Scientology (Church) and then sealed off the building.

The reports state that the Church in Belgium is being investigated for extortion and fraud for allegedly posting false job openings in newspapers and then attempting to get those who applied to join the Church. Several ex-members of the Church have also reportedly approached authorities with accusations of intimidation and extortion.

Police in Belgium have been investigating the Church for nearly ten years which resulted in the raid on Thursday.

In a statement to the press, the Church says that the police “violated their fundamental rights” as a religious organization and accused the police of “malicious justice operations.” The Church plans to contest any charges filed against it. They also state that the postings were requests for volunteers and not employees.

So far no arrests have been made, but some employees of the Church were detained and questioned by police.

The building remains closed as of publication.

Eric Allen, The Truth About Taking Mlm Mainstream And To Record Status}

May 13th, 2022 | Communication Skills Training |

Submitted by: Eric H Allen

Eric Allen is not your typical or traditional MLM top earner, and he is quite proud of this distinction. He has always been one to create his own path in life, centered around his passions and interests. Whether it is working with at-risk youth, coaching the game of basketball, or spending quality time with his family, he had never been one to chase the Almighty Dollar. Although Eric originally pursued a traditional college education in business, and graduated from a top-ranked business school in the U.S., he realized that his life would be more aligned with his values and greater purpose by becoming an inner city high school teacher and basketball coach. After seven years in the teaching profession, Eric received the opportunity to pursue another lifetime goal in getting the opportunity to coach Division One Basketball full time – even though it was a significant pay cut from an already very meager high school teaching and coaching salary. Although he is very proud of the accomplishments he achieved in during this journey in his life, including winning numerous state and national teaching honors, authoring a best-selling book, achieving various coaching recognitions, and, most importantly, making true impacts on the lives of his students and players, he also came to the disturbing realization that his current journey in life as a teacher and basketball coach, although intrinsically fulfilling and rewarding, was never going to allow him to realize the lifestyle or philanthropic goals he had for his family and greater future.

As Eric reflected and prepared himself for a major life shift – even though he was seemingly unaware of what that might entail – the world of network marketing presented itself. Eric, like many, had to break down his false predispositions toward multi level marketing, but decided that this profession offered the most legitimate means to begin to develop a “Plan B” that would ultimately get him to where he wanted to be financially – and he embarked on this pursuit while enduring a very hectic and grueling college basketball coaching workload. These often included 90+ hour work weeks, on campus, in practice, scouting, road trips, tutoring, and a host of other duties and responsibilities.

Eric Allen credits Brian Tracy and other top experts – who he actually chose to go into business with in his primary and only business opportunity – as the reason for his internal foundation for success, and meteoric rise to prosperity in network marketing. Believe it or not, Eric makes more on one month now than he used to make in over TWO YEARS on a teaching salary, and THREE YEARS on a coaching salary! More importantly, he is able to spend quality time with his family and be in a more powerful position to implement concrete changes and programs to benefit the lives of at-risk and disadvantaged youth.

Today, Eric Allen is leading the charge in cultivating a more mainstream and well-respected outlook on the network marketing industry. It is Eric’s conviction that as more and more genuine, success-oriented individuals from all walks of life experience the freedoms uniquely available in network marketing, the industry as a whole will serve to benefit and empower the lives of exponentially more like-minded individuals globally.

Eric’s current overarching mission is to rapidly and ethically legitimize and enhance the image of the industry by embodying and promoting a culture of professionalism, integrity, and true entrepreneuralism. Eric and his wife Casey now live an amazingly abundant lifestyle and are able to give back philanthropically to several causes they are passionate about – all because of their refreshingly straight-up, laid back, and “non-cheesy” approach to network marketing success. Eric is confident in his ability to transform and empower the life of any genuine, ambitious, and coachable person through the wonderful platform of network marketing!

About the Author: Eric Allen is continuing to inspire and galvanize thousands and thousands of like-minded, genuine professionals, both new to the industry and experienced veterans, because of his refreshing approach to prosperity in MLM. His rapid results speak for themselves, and prove that you do not have to be a “cheeseball” to experience all of the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards in the network marketing profession. Officials said on Thursday, after analyzing data from the Germanwings Flight 9525 cockpit voice recorder, that the airbus crashed into the French Alps because its co-pilot deliberately crashed it.

On the cockpit voice recorder, the captain can be heard trying to get back into the cockpit. Transponder data indicates the autopilot was told to descend form 38,000 feet to 100 feet. The last part of the recording contains screaming during the sudden decent.

Investigators are still searching for the plane’s flight data recorder.

The co-pilot started training in 2008, and was diagnosed in 2009 with serious depression according to BBC News. Later he completed his training and passed all his tests to pilot, according to Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr.

In light of this incident, several airlines announced a ban on leaving any one person alone in the cockpit.

Medical Malpractice Lawyers You Never Know When You May Need One

Medical Malpractice Lawyers – You Never Know When You May Need One

by

Tyson J Stevenson

Medical malpractice occurs when a health care provider who by an action or omission deviates from the accepted norms of practice in medicine leading to injury/ death to a patient.

Many deaths occur due to medical malpractice. A health care provider is not just the doctor or the surgeon but includes nurses, dentists, therapists, hospitals, clinics etc. Medical malpractice law is derived from the general negligence law.

Various laws have evolved in the US, England, Australia and other countries, which are similar in concept for control of medical malpractice.

Claims are made for negligence, misdiagnosis, improper medication etc. Claims can even be made where informed consent of the patient is taken. Claims can also be made against corporations, hospitals, clinics for the mistake of their employees based on vicarious liability. The patient has the right to claim economic and non-economic damages.

However in medical malpractice cases, the burden of proof lies with the plaintiff (patient). Hence the patient should hire a good lawyer. Three things have to be proved by the plaintiff:

The health care provider failed to provide adequate and reasonable care to the patient.

This failure to provide adequate care to the patient has resulted in damage or loss to the patient.

The health care provider is liable to pay the damages or loss.

The damages are of two types, compensatory and punitive.

Compensatory damages are of two types economic and non-economic damages.

Economic damages are monetary losses like, medical care, medicines and loss of wages.

These damages can be in the past or future. Non-economic damages are the ones like loss of organ or vision, pain, disfigurement, embarrassment emotional stress etc. Punitive damages are very rarely awarded.

Medical malpractice cases are complicated because when the patient is admitted he is already injured or ill and hence the damage caused by negligent medical care has to be assessed independently of the earlier illness or injury.

A further obstacle in medical malpractice case is that expert witness is to be provided by the plaintiff. Very few doctors are willing to testify against another doctor even when the case of negligent care is clear.

On the other hand the defendant lawyers have a pool of doctors to defend the case of negligent medical care. Usually medical malpractice attorney firms provide expert testimony on the care provided by the health care provider. Some medical malpractice lawyer firms provide free case evaluation and take medical malpractice cases on contingent basis that is until the firm wins the case for the client, the client need not pay for the services of the lawyers.

In medical malpractice cases it is vital to obtain the medical records as early as possible by the patient or his representative.

Most healthcare providers take medical malpractice insurance. There has been an ongoing debate by doctors and their medical malpractice insurance companies against excessive jury awards. Generally insurance companies rarely go to trial where large penalties are involved. However it must be remembered that the insurance companies and health care providers are willing to fight it out against spurious medical malpractice claims. The procedure for filing a medical malpractice claim varies from state to state.
