Satire site Uncyclopedia, a parody of online encyclopedia Wikipedia, has been labeled by the Malaysian government as dangerous. The Internal Security Department of Malaysia issued the warning today, saying that the site has “messages and information insulting Malaysia”.
The warning notes the creation date of the website as being 5 January 2005, and hosted by Wikia, Inc., both of which are correct. However, it claims Wikia owns Wikipedia; Wikipedia is a charitable non-profit website owned by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, while Wikia is an independent, for-profit company.
The report evidently mentions that Uncyclopedia covers Malaysian “history, culture, the political leaders, the government, the national song and the name / history of the national flag,” none of which is “correct”. They accuse the website of helping to reinforce a bad international image of their country.
There are no reports of the site being blocked from access within the country, only this statement, which urges Malaysians not to circulate the content.
Uncyclopedia’s article on Malaysia begins:
|
Essentially the penis of Asia which is located to the north of their cousins who live on an even smaller island Singapore, Malaysia (also known as Bolehland) is a young nation of diverse cultures and races such as F1 Formula-1 and Nascar. The timezone of Malaysia is unique because it follows the system of +1/+2 PMT (Predetermined Meeting Time) which is 1 or 2 hours later than PMT. Most foreigners have difficulty adjusting to this new timezone as they tend to show up 1 or 2 hours earlier than the local counterparts. The nation is moving forward with a vision towards becoming a developed nation by the year 2020, 3030, 4040 or whatever catchy number.
…Another common state that Malaysians have is denial (no lah, where got?), which incidentally, is a river in Egypt.

|
The site has fired back with a parody article posted at the site under their UnNews section, titled Uncyclopedia Internal Security Department warns on Malaysia. The article suggests that the “Internal Security Department of the Uncyclomedia Foundation,” which is a facetious and fictitious parent organization of Uncyclopedia, identifies Malaysia “as a dangerous country… It warned its people not to use the country today.”
There are forty-seven individual language editions of Uncyclopedia, including Tolololpedia, which is written in Bahasa Melayu, the Malay language. This is in addition to fictional “language” editions which include Oscar Wilde, Newspeak, N00b, White Supremacist, and Re: PharmaccgRy.

Calling all cannabis-enthusiasts and foodies! Meet our latest obsession. Underground, nomadic and infused with cannabis? Get ready to meet Toronto’s latest obsession: the Enlightened Dining Club that brings together design, cannabis, and food in the heart of the city. The dinner features a uniquely tailored menu, chock full of high-end ingredients and the best cannabis that the city offers, this event has a confidential guest list and a hidden venue that is only available a few days before the event itself. Ladies and Gentlemen, we give you, cannabis fine dining.
Where To Find Cannabis Fine Dining?
Hosted by the cannabis lifestyle brand byMINISTRY, the Enlightened Dining Club is a super private, secret supper club that will run you anywhere from $100 to $150 dollars a ticket. With the intent of being more than just “something that gets you high,” this dinner is an elevated experience for those who enjoy cannabis for more than just the psychedelic effects. The last event, held on the 21st of January was heralded as “The moveable feast for forward-thinkers. A 5-course dining experience created by Ted Corrado, artist Dahae Song and nVoid.” and featured an immersive 5-course sensory exploration of our own philosophy in plant-forward cooking; with food and art seamlessly intertwined to heighten your experience.”
The first of its kind to be seen in Canada, byMINISTRY’s events boast “design-led locations, collaborations with local and international chefs, artists and creators, and some damn interesting table talk” and feature the work of byMINISTRY culinary director Ted Corrado, who formerly worked at The Drake Hotel and the Royal Ontario Museum kitchen as head chef. Corrado is known for his “cannabistronomy” expertise and joined byMINISTRY late last year to bring his plant-forward food and drink to all byMINISTRY spaces and events.
According to The GrowthOp, for one of the most recent meals, Chef Corrado “chose to keep the cannabis dosage for the entire meal under 10 mg.” In an interview with the chef post-event, he stated that “the first two courses had 5 mg of THC and the dessert, in an attempt to balance things out, was high in CBD. I wanted the guests to not only enjoy the night but walk out feeling in control,” he says.
Every dish has been designed to elevate the mind and palette, with cannabis creatively woven into each bite. An example of the menu can be found here, on the DesignTO site.
To comply with strict regulations set by Health Canada, the dinners are set in a private, undisclosed location, and only open to those who are 19 years of age or older; all attendees are required to sign a waiver that outlines that no attendee purchased cannabis on-site, but was rather just purchasing the experience and services provided by byMINISTRY.
This is not the only endeavour put forth by byMINISTRY, who announced mid-2019 that they would be launching “Consumption_Lounge,” an 8,000 square foot lounge that allows cannabis enthusiasts everywhere to enjoy cannabis-infused, plant-forward food, drinks, and products. This project is just waiting on legislation to evolve before fully opening; currently, the The_Lab, which is the first culinary school for gastronomic exploration in cannabis-infused cooking is open and managed by Chef Corrado.
What’s next? The next series, kicking off in February will bring together the talents of Chef Corrado and Chef Matt Ravenscroft, known for his work at Toronto vegan-mainstay, Rosalinda. Toronto Tastemakers, if you’re interested, tickets can be purchased by signing up for the newsletter on the byMINISTRY site. Late February byMINISTRY is opening their green tea-oriented cafe on 298 Markham Street in Toronto. Stay tuned for news on that front, we’re keeping a close eye on this trend, so check back on updates soon.
For those interested in the science behind eating cannabis vs smoking, we have you covered.

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.
If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.
There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”
There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Researchers have found a crucial genetic difference between humans and chimps that could help explain our language and speech abilities. The difference lies in a gene called FOXP2 which encodes for a protein of the same name. This acts as a transcription factor, controlling the activity of other genes.
The human and chimp versions of the protein differ in only two of their 740 amino acid components, but when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, replaced the human gene with the chimp version in neurons grown in the laboratory, they found it affected the expression of at least 116 other genes.
The results are detailed in a paper published on Thursday in the scientific journal Nature.
Author of the study Dr. Daniel Geschwind, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said the gene had a “major role” in differences between chimps and humans. “We showed that the human and chimp versions of FOXP2 not only look different but function differently too.”
|
We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language |
|
|
Some of the affected genes control the formation of connections in the brain, whilst others relate to facial movements. Several have already been found to be involved in language disorders. Mutations in FOXP2 itself were also known to affect speech and language; the gene was first identified in members of a family suffering from language problems who were found to share a genetic mutation.
Frances Vargha-Khadem at University College London has studied patients with FOXP2 mutations, and agrees with the new research. As well as language problems, some of her subjects have changes in the shape of their jaws, mouths and tongues. She thinks that chimps may also have these differences.
“We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language,” said Genevieve Konopka, one of the authors of the paper at UCLA.
Previous research indicates that the changes in FOXP2 occurred around 200,000 years ago with the rise of modern humans. Geschwind also suggests that several of the related genes may have evolved together. Preliminary studies have shown signs that they too emerged relatively recently.
Scientists are now keen to further study FOXP2 and the genes that it affects. Geschwind believes this could eventually lead to breakthroughs in treatment for disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, which affect language skills.
The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the A.P. Giannini Foundation and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.

Viktor Schreckengost, the father of industrial design and creator of the Jazz Bowl, an iconic piece of Jazz Age art designed for Eleanor Roosevelt during his association with Cowan Pottery died yesterday. He was 101.
Schreckengost was born on June 26, 1906 in Sebring, Ohio, United States.
Schreckengost’s peers included the far more famous designers Raymond Loewy and Norman Bel Geddes.
In 2000, the Cleveland Museum of Art curated the first ever retrospective of Schreckengost’s work. Stunning in scope, the exhibition included sculpture, pottery, dinnerware, drawings, and paintings.
