Canadian power worker says grid is ‘String of Christmas Lights that’s been Running Since the 1950s’

Canadian power worker says grid is ‘String of Christmas Lights that’s been Running Since the 1950s’

Saturday, August 11, 2007

“Just like they told us that our bridges were safe, they also want us to swallow that our power grid is in no danger of a system-wide, no-power-for-weeks crash”, said tenured power grid expert Donald McCormick, a senior contractor with Hydro One, an Ontario, Canada based electricity provider.

Mr. McCormick indicated that in reality though, there’s no question that the system of grids that supply power throughout the continent are in much worse shape than the majority of bridges, levees and borders in Canada and U.S. He has over two decades of experience in all aspects of power grid construction, infrastructure, maintenance, and distribution. During a recent interview, Mr. McCormick compared the ten major interconnected power regions that comprise the “North American Grid”, to a string of Christmas lights that’s been active non-stop since the 1950s. Mr. McCormick’s qualifications include being a licensed red seal interprovincial/interstate electrical engineer and he’s worked at numerous power generating stations mainly in Canada, but also across the U.S. He’s participated in building regional infrastructure related to both generation and distribution. Additionally, Mr. McCormick is Orange Level qualified as an Atomic Radiation Worker (ARW) registered in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. McCormick offered his candid assessment of today’s continental “power grid” by making several observations about this critical, civilization-supporting industry. His power plant experience includes both nuclear and coal, and he’s a certified expert in alternative fuel technologies such as wind, solar and hydrogen. He said that, from nuclear to coal, the majority of power generating plants operating across North America have momentous deficiencies, and the collective 10-region “power grid” has not been maintained properly (across the board) since the 1960s. Population growth has created a state in which North American power consumption is far greater than what is being yielded by current technological capacity to generate consumable energy. Mr. McCormick indicated that the infamous August 2003 blackout, in which the Northeastern U.S., Mid-Eastern U.S. and most of Ontario suffered stifling, life-interrupting blackouts, was just the beginning of something much more significant. In reference to the North American Power Grid Initiative, he said that it’s nothing more than a case of, “too little, too late”.

“You’re frequently seeing substandard parts and equipment being employed, on sites across the continent, and being used for sensitive construction projects, often related to components integral to the grid system itself. North American nuclear energy generating plants are among the worst when it comes to safety violations, not only endangering on-site employees with blatant disregard but also literally thousands of people with regard to unregulated, unnoticed pollution and waste being dumped in rivers, lakes and oceans, into the atmosphere and, more specifically, our entire ecosystem,” said McCormick.

Mr. McCormick strongly feels that another major breakdown of the grid system may occur by the end of this year, and he further stated that he’s also concerned that domestic power grid system is in grave danger of being undermined by terrorists.

Hungarian state-owned enterprise acquires Hirtenberger Defence Group

Hungarian state-owned enterprise acquires Hirtenberger Defence Group

Thursday, November 7, 2019

On Monday, Hungarian daily newspaper Magyar Nemzet revealed a deal whereby, on October 29, Hungarian state-owned enterprise HDT Védelmi Ipari Kft. (HDT Limited) acquired Austrian mortar and shell manufacturer Hirtenberger Defence Group. Hirtenberger Defence Group also acknowledged the deal.

In the deal, Austrian, United Kingdom and New Zealand production sites are to be kept, with market sales expected to cover for the price in the long run. A government-guaranteed loan covered the costs, but the exact figure was kept secret.

The November 4 issue of Magyar Nemzet published an interview with Gáspár Maróth, the Hungarian Government commissioner responsible for defence, defence industries and coordinating defence modernization, in which the deal was announced. On the same day, the Hirtenberger Defence Group issued a corresponding press release.

While not naming any other bidders, Maróth said the Hungarian bid won after lengthy negotiations, out of mulitple competing offers. He said he expects no political turmoil between the neighboring Austria and Hungary over the sale. He also noted the acquisition fits into the Hungarian “outward investment” ((hu))Hungarian language: ?t?kekihelyezési strategy of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.

The Austrian partner asked for the price to be kept secret, but the commissioner stated the purchase was financed by a loan, so it is not a burden on the state budget. With government resolution No. 1430/2019, the state issued an indemnity bond to cover for HDT’s 38.8 million euro loan, and daily Népszava covered the story with a headline pointing out that amount as the presumed price. The creditor Hungarian Development Bank is state-owned as well. Already-queued orders won’t leave idle capacity for some years, Maróth said, and paying back this loan seems realistic; unnamed industry experts called this dubious to Népszava, as the market is saturated and margins are thin, while noting this kind of equipment is needed by the Defence Forces.

The company structure remains unchanged and all sites continue to operate, but Hungarian engineers are to join the research and development team. Maróth pointed out it would have been much more costly and time-consuming to research mortar technology than to acquire it this way. He noted, “the army modernization does not just cover buying ‘hardware’ but technology transfer as well.” ((hu))Hungarian language: ?a hader? modernizációja a „vas” megvétele mellett a tudástranszferre is kiterjed.

Népszava noted the purchase appeared to circumvent the Ministry of Defence. HDT Limited was registered on August 6, 2019 and is under the aegis of Hungarian National Asset Management, Inc.

To modernize its military, in 2018, Hungary licensed Czech firearm technology and started assembling firearms in Kiskunfélegyháza, then agreed with Airbus to open a helicopter parts factory as a joint venture in Gyula.

US President Trump has called for NATO members to increase military spending. According to a March 14, 2019 NATO press release, Hungary spent an estimated 1.15% of its GDP on military expenditures in 2018; NATO guidelines call for 2%. Maróth noted the military had been “effectively disarmed” ((hu))Hungarian language: ?gyakorlatilag lefegyverzett by 2010, when Viktor Orbán regained the prime ministry of Hungary for his second term. Hungary launched a military development program dubbed “Zrínyi 2026” in 2017 to address structural and financial challenges faced by the Defence Force and to renew its equipment.

All On Four Dental Implants Versus Traditional Implant Techniques

All on Four Dental Implants versus Traditional Implant Techniques

by

Jack De Richards

In 1993, European implantologist Dr. Paulo Malo was responsible for the innovation of a dental implant protocol that was to surpass traditional implant techniques in the benefits and advantages it afforded both patients and oral surgeons. All on Four dental implants, as they are aptly referred to, not only enable edentulous (not having a single original adult tooth left) and near-edentulous patients to receive a complete set of new and non-removable teeth in as little as a single day, but they do so with minimal recovery time and at a much reduced cost to traditional implant techniques.

A Closer Look at All on Four Dental Implants

During the procedure for the placement of All on Four dental implants, oral surgeons insert two tiny titanium screws into the front portion of the jaw and another two at an angle in the back portion of the jaw, avoiding vital structures like the sinus cavities in the upper jaw and the nerve canal in the lower jaw. Together these four implants provide all the support necessary for a prosthetic dental bridge that has been custom fabricated to fit inside the patient s mouth comfortably. With All on Four dental implants almost never requiring bone grafting surgery beforehand, the entire procedure can readily be completed in a single day, effectively providing patients with a comprehensive one-time solution.

All on Four Dental Implants and Traditional Implant Techniques

So, how do All on Four dental implants compare with traditional dental implant techniques? Well, when it comes to the need for oral rehabilitation (in other words, the treatment of patients that require a new set of teeth) there is no comparison really! And here s why:

All on Four Dental Implants almost always enable oral surgeons to bypass bone grafting surgery, which not only takes several months for healing before implants can be placed, but is an expensive and painful procedure too.

Traditional dental implant techniques frequently call for as many as 20 implants for complete oral rehabilitation. If you consider that each implant and crown costs in the region of $3,500 to $4,000, getting a new set of teeth can work out to be extremely expensive! All on Four dental implants, as the name suggests, only requires four implants per jaw and eight in total for a complete set of new, non-removable and immediately functional teeth.

All on Four dental implants only requires a single surgery for placement. Traditional implant protocol can require several surgeries in addition to bone grafting, which creates a very long road to oral rehabilitation.

Without the need for so many dental implants, multiple surgeries, bone grafting, consultations and recovery periods, not to mention the equivalent time off from work, All on Four dental implants work out to be far more economical than bone grafting (i.e. sinus lifts ) and traditional placement techniques! In fact, patients can often save as much as $15,000-$20,000 or more on complete oral rehabilitation with this innovative tooth replacement protocol!

All on Four dental implants incur a shorter recovery period, with patients often returning to work the very day after the procedure! With traditional placement protocol being more invasive and with more implants necessary, patients frequently spend more time in recovery, coping with greater post-operative pain and discomfort.

For all these reasons and more, All on Four dental implants have proven themselves to be a far superior choice for patients requiring a second chance at having a beautiful and healthy smile!

Wikinews interviews Sandra Jephcott, Sustainable Australia candidate for 2020 Groom by-election
August 23rd, 2022 | Uncategorized |

Friday, November 27, 2020

Voters in the Australian electoral district of Groom are scheduled to go to the polls in a by-election this week following the resignation of Liberal National MP John McVeigh for family reasons.

Groom is located in the state of Queensland, and is centred around the city of Toowoomba. At the last federal election, the Liberal National Party, Queensland’s dominant conservative party, won this seat by over 70% of the two-party-preferred vote, and since the seat’s creation in 1984, it has been held by conservative political parties.

Some political analysts considered this a foregone conclusion, with analyst Kevin Bonham having declared it on his blog as “Australia’s most boring by-election”, however Bonham noted the size of the swing may have been indicative of the dominant centre left Labor Party’s general performance in Queensland. There was a 4.2% swing against the Labor Party in the state of Queensland at the previous federal election.

Wikinews spoke to one of the four candidates running in the by-election, Sandra Jephcott, who is running for the Sustainable Australia party. Sustainable Australia describes itself as a “independent community movement from the political centre”. According to the party’s website, Jephcott is a veterinarian and farmer, who has completed a veterinary degree from the University of Queensland, as well as a Master of Business Affairs at Bond University and a Master of Science at James Cook University. With Wikinews, Jephcott discussed climate change, COVID-19, water security, and foreign ownership.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out">
Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

August 23rd, 2022 | Uncategorized |

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Filipchenko, registered on the New York City Campaign Finance Board as Vitaly A. Filipchenko, is the first Russian candidate for New York City mayor, being born in Tomsk, Siberia in 1973, according to news agency Sputnik. He has since naturalised as a United States citizen. According to the web site, Filipchenko has been educated in road construction and maintenance and owns a moving services company; he describes himself on his web site as a “small business owner”. On his web site’s platform page, he says that “[m]y English may not be perfect – but my platform is.”

Incumbent Democrat mayor Bill de Blasio, who won re-election in the 2017 New York City mayoral election by 66.5%, cannot run for a third term under term limits. As of April 28, 22 candidates are currently running, the majority of whom are also Democrats. Using An Ice Cube Distributor In Suffolk County Ny To Keep Food Cool

August 21st, 2022 | Shipping |

byAlma Abell

When someone is going to be selling food products at a county fair, it becomes necessary to take the steps needed to keep perishables from becoming ruined in warm temperatures. There are several steps the food booth operator can do to ensure the products they are selling are kept in the best possible condition so contamination does not set in.

First, appropriate containers will need to be obtained to house food items. A small cooler or refrigerator may be used if there is electricity at the fair booth site. If there is not, then large coolers should be purchased to hold the items so they are kept away from hot conditions.

A visit to an ice cube distributor is a great way to fill these enclosures so the food will remain chilled at all times. The distributor can be visited each day to fill up the containers before the beginning of the selling session. A simple trip to the facility will ensure the food is kept cold for the duration of the event.

Cubes can be purchased in a variety of sizes, making it easy to select the right type for the food that needs to be stored. A block of ice can be used to place larger items on top of if they need to remain chilled for longer periods of time. Standard sized cubes can be used if housing several smaller food items so each surface will be sure to have a cooler temperature touching it while inside the container.

It is important to keep coolers in an area out of direct sunlight. This will help to keep the ice cubes inside intact without melting prematurely. Look for an area under a table or in direct shade to ensure the food in the cooler stays at its absolute coolest.

If someone needs to visit an ice cube distributor in Suffolk County NY, they can find a reputable supplier in the area. Contact Ice Fuel LI to find out more about the products they offer to their customers. A trip to their facility can be made to pick up cubes if desired.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal">
Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Thursday, July 3, 2014

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.

Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.

In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”

An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.

Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

A teenager, belonging to the anti-scientology group Anonymous, has admitted that he launched a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the official website of the Church of Scientology, scientology.org.

Dmitriy Guzner, aged 18, will admit to the charges related to carrying out the DDoS attack. He now faces a maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment.

In response to incidents such as these, Scientology have called Anonymous “cyber-terrorists.”

A DDoS attack occurs when multiple computers are used to attack a certain website with so much traffic that it is not accessible. The hackers attack the servers taking up all the available space, preventing the legitimate user from accessing.
