While nearly all cover of the 2008 Presidential election has focused on the Democratic and Republican candidates, the race for the White House also includes independents and third party candidates. These parties represent a variety of views that may not be acknowledged by the major party platforms.
As a non-partisan news source, Wikinews has impartially reached out to these candidates, throughout the campaign. The most recent of our interviews is North Carolina, Tom Millican, an independent corporate manager and Vietnam veteran.

The Internet group Project Chanology today held protests critical of the Church of Scientology. The protests marked what would have been the 49th birthday of Lisa McPherson, who is claimed to be a victim of the Church of Scientology’s practices. Lisa died in 1995 during a running of what Scientologists refer to as an Introspection Rundown, a procedure intended to help Church members deal with a psychotic or deeply traumatic event.
Protests were planned throughout the day in 14 countries and over 50 different cities. The estimation of total protesters world wide for Feb. 10, 2008 is 9,250 people.
Wikinews had correspondents at a number of protest locations to report on the events. This article was updated throughout the day with reports from around the globe.

To say that online sportsbooks are convenient is the understatement of the century. There are people in Las Vegas who use online sportsbooks to place their sports wagers, because it’s quicker than getting in the car and driving five minutes to the nearest sportsbook.
It seems like online sportsbooks are popping up everyday now. I remember when there were just a handful of online sportsbooks. Today, there are hundreds of them. With the onslaught of choices, it’s important to protect yourself from making a bad one. As I’m sure you know, not all online sportsbooks are operating on the up and up.
So, what can you do to avoid being the next helpless victim of online sportsbook fraud? Today, I want to present you with a challenge. Meet this challenge and your chances of being ripped off by an online sportsbook will decrease substantially. The challenge involves collecting bits of information on the online sportsbook before placing a wager.
Here are the pieces of information you should know before you deposit one penny into any online sportsbook. First, find the name of the company that owns the online sportsbook. Once you have this information, find out whether they have a physical address.
See where this company is located and do a search to see what else they are associated withsuch as more gambling properties, something shady or whatever. You definitely don’t want to give your sports betting business to any company that’s not highly visible. If you can’t find information about the company without hiring a private investigator, you need to move on.
Here’s another idea. Email the online sportsbook and ask them for their company information and see what comes back. You also want to know how long their company has been in business and how long the online sportsbook has been in operation. Be cautious of any online sportsbook that you can’t verify all this information.
Once you’ve moved past this point, it’s time to do some searching. The first thing I would do is click over to a couple of search engines, type in the company name and see what comes up. I’d also do the name of the sportsbook and the domain name.
It’s your hard earned money at stake. You can never been too cautious or too diligent in your research. Do business with highly visible companies with a proven track record and you’ll have a great shot of living a happy online sports betting life. Good luck!

Correction — March 19, 2008 The next protest is scheduled for April 12, 2008. The article below states April 18 which is incorrect.

The Internet group Anonymous today held further protests critical of the Church of Scientology.
The global protests started in Australia where several hundred protesters gathered at different locations for peaceful protests.
In a global speech, the Internet protest movement said Scientology “betrayed the trust of its members, [had] taken their money, their rights, and at times their very lives.” The protesters welcomed the public interest their protests have led to, and claimed they witnessed “an unprecedented flood of Scientologists [joining] us across the world to testify about these abuses.” The group said it would continue with monthly actions.
In a press statement from its European headquarters, Scientology accused the anonymous protesters of “hate speech and hate crimes”, alleging that security measures were necessary because of death threats and bomb threats. This also makes the Church want to “identify members” of the group it brands as “cyber-terrorists”.
Wikinews had correspondents in a number of protest locations to report on the events.
Anonymous states that the next protest is scheduled to take place on April 18, which happens to be the birthday of Suri, the daughter of Tom and Katie Cruise.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.
A park in the U.S. state of Wisconsin has been closed, due to being over-run by gypsy mothcaterpillars.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced the unprecedented move yesterday, with officials saying they would temporarily close Rocky Arbor State Park near Wisconsin Dells due to an infestation of gypsy moth larvae.
The larvae are present at the park in such large numbers that, according to a report by the Wisconsin State Journal, camping there would “apparently be a squishy, nightmarish experience.”
Mark Guthmiller, DNR gypsy moth suppression coordinator said that “there are also health and safety considerations that prompted our action,” explaining that there was a significant risk of people having severe allergic reactions to the caterpillars. There were also concerns that the caterpillars might be accidentally transported out of the park on park user’s vehicles to areas where the moths have as yet failed to establish themselves. Guthmiller also commented that related sanitation issues” would also “significantly detract from the quality park camping experience.”
Andrea Diss-Torrance, another gypsy moth coordinator for the DNR, said of the infestation: “It’s very severe – it’s as severe as I have ever seen.”
The closure, which will run until at least June 27, is thought to affect around 95 campground reservations at the site, which covers 255 acres. State officials have been attempting to arrange alternatives for campers at nearby parks, or, failing this being acceptable, are offering refunds. The park will be closed until after the caterpillars have completed pupation – the period in their life cycle in which they transform into moths.
The gypsy moth is a pest in the U.S., having been introduced in the 19th-century in a failed attempt to to try to breed a hardy variant of silkworm. The moths can strip the leaves off at least 250 different tree species, and as they lack natural predators in the U.S., cause significant damage. The moths often chew leaves but don’t actually eat them, thus increasing the potential damage.
At Rocky Arbor, they have already stripped all the trees in some areas of the park. The caterpillars can kill trees directly, but more usually weaken them so that they are more susceptible to die from other causes, such as disease.
Making the choice to hire a tree removal in Boston service can be a difficult one. It is easy to get attached to your trees. After all those years of watering, pruning and maintenance, seeing your tree go is never easy. You might however have no choice but to have your trees or a specific tree removed. This will be advantageous in the long-run, and here is how:
There will be less yard cleanup needed. Modern day working life is very demanding leaving little time for chores. Hiring someone to do the cleanup can be an expense that a lot of homeowners don’t want to bear. It is much easier to have the problem tree(s) removed. Leaves, branches and other debris can create unsightly messes on your yard. If not properly cleaned up, they can begin to rot which comes with its own set of problems. A perfect remedy is therefore to simply get rid of the tree and forget about cleanup for good.
Some trees can also pose serious risks to people and property. This is especially the case with falling branches and other debris. The tree may also be rotting and on the verge of collapse. This can pose a serious threat that can be potentially life threatening. The problem can be even more serious where there are children. Their adventurous nature may lead them to climb otherwise unstable trees which can potentially result in serious accidents. It is therefore much safer for everyone to have the tree removed.
Maintenance is also another reason why you might want to seek services for tree removal in Boston. Some varieties of trees are expensive to maintain. They involve constant work and attention, and most likely the services of a qualified arborist. If you are strapped for cash, this can be a serious problem. It is therefore easier to get rid of the tree and with it the cost of maintenance. Making the decision to remove trees is not easy but may be one that is ultimately beneficial. Should you choose this as the way to go, seek the services of a qualified arborist at Cambridge Landscape Co. Inc. They offer professional tree removal in addition to a host of other landscaping services.
A second night of rioting on Sunday night and into Monday morning has taken place in and around Belfast, Northern Ireland, with loyalist mobs attacking police, hijacking vehicles and setting them alight.
A crowd of about 700 gathered on the Albertbridge road in the east of the city, where police were attacked. A mob of about 100 attacked police in the north of the city, and in the west of the city, a police station was attacked with a blast bomb (homemade grenade).
A digger was used to take out streetlighting before the disorder, with some of the street left in darkness. It is also believed that an ATM was removed by the digger. The police and army came under attack as they moved in to retrieve the items and respond.
Cars were hijacked and set alight in a number of locations. A more serious incident occurred in Bangor, some distance east of Belfast in County Down where a bus was hijacked. Passengers were ordered off the vehicle before being robbed, and the bus set alight, blocking a road.
Baton rounds were again fired by police and the army, with the army also firing one live round. A suspect was shot and apprehended in this incident, and they are to be charged with attempted murder.
The previous night’s riots were the worst seen in Northern Ireland for many years, and a first for involving live fire at police during a public disorder incident.
Toyota has been accused by a U.S. House of Representatives committee with misleading the public and investigators over its recent recalls.
The accusations, in a statement from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, claim that Toyota both relied on a flawed study in its assessment of the issue of sticking accelerator pedals at the heart of the recalls, and then made misleading statements about its response. According to the authors of the letter, Henry Waxman and Bart Stupak, Toyota dismissed, rather than investigated, the idea that the cars’ computers were at fault. In a statement, James Lentz, the president of Toyota’s American division, claimed that hardware issues were to blame, and that dealers were repairing the faulty part. Toyota also released a study commissioned from the research firm Exponent that said electronic systems were not to blame.
According to the House committee, however, the study involved only six vehicles, none of which had problems with their electrical systems, and was insufficient to produce an accurate result. “Our preliminary assessment is that Toyota resisted the possibility that electronic defects could cause safety concerns, relied on a flawed engineering report and made misleading public statements concerning the adequacy of recent recalls to address the risk of sudden unintended acceleration.”
The company is under a criminal investigation, and has received two subpoenas for documents from two House committees relating to the recalls, although whether they are directly related to the letter is unclear. The documents are related to accelerator issues in several models, as well as brake problems with the Prius hybrid car, and were served earlier in in February by a federal grand jury and the Securities and Exchange Commission. Toyota has released upwards of 75,000 pages of documents under the requests.
In a separate, though related, development, it has emerged that Toyota last year negotiated a limited recall for two models, the Toyota Camry and Lexus ES, that were affected by the accelerator recalls, saving the company an estimated $100 million. A confidential internal presentation in July 2009 made the claim, and a month later, a Lexus ES, one of the models under the limited recall crashed in California, killing four people. The claims apparently referenced a September, 2007 recall of floor mats that could trap gas pedals, the same problem that triggered a full recall of numerous Toyota cars to fix the same problem. In the same presentation, the company claimed to have avoided recalls of another model related to rust, as well as delaying new federal safety regulations.
