Commonwealth Bank of Australia CEO apologies for financial planning scandal

Ian Narev, the CEO of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, this morning “unreservedly” apologised to clients who lost money in a scandal involving the bank’s financial planning services arm.
Last week, a Senate enquiry found financial advisers from the Commonwealth Bank had made high-risk investments of clients’ money without the clients’ permission, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars lost. The Senate enquiry called for a Royal Commission into the bank, and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).
Mr Narev stated the bank’s performance in providing financial advice was “unacceptable”, and the bank was launching a scheme to compensate clients who lost money due to the planners’ actions.
In a statement Mr Narev said, “Poor advice provided by some of our advisers between 2003 and 2012 caused financial loss and distress and I am truly sorry for that. […] There have been changes in management, structure and culture. We have also invested in new systems, implemented new processes, enhanced adviser supervision and improved training.”
An investigation by Fairfax Media instigated the Senate inquiry into the Commonwealth Bank’s financial planning division and ASIC.
Whistleblower Jeff Morris, who reported the misconduct of the bank to ASIC six years ago, said in an article for The Sydney Morning Herald that neither the bank nor ASIC should be in control of the compensation program.

The United States Army has suspended its contract with a company that delivered old and corroding ammunition from China for use by Afghan army and police forces in a way that violated the contract terms.
The ammunition was supplied by the Miami-based AEY Inc., a company run by a 22-year old named Efrain Diveroli. The nearly US$300 million contract stated that bullets were coming from Hungary, but were actually decades-old, damaged and corroded bullets from China.
Officials from the Army Legal Services Agency notified Diveroli, via a letter, that his company is suspended from future contracting with any U.S. government agency. The letter came as part of an Army investigation since November regarding violation of the contract.
According to the New York Times, Diveroli signed papers back on November 25, 2007 certifying that 28 pallets of ammunition for Afghanistan had been manufactured by MFS 2000, a Hungarian company, according to a memo written by investigators.
AEY violated the contract by breaking two clauses, one stating that the ammunition could not be acquired directly or indirectly from the People’s Republic of China, which is a violation of American law. The other clause specified that it must be packaged to comply with best commercial practices for international shipment.
According to the Times, says the ammunition arrived in decomposing cardboard boxes which contained ammunition dating as far back as 1966. However, Army officials believe some ammunition even dates back further to 1962.
The Army had contracted with AEY in January 2007 to supply various types of nonstandard ammunition for use by the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police, an Army official said on background. The company was required to purchase the ammunition and deliver it to Kabul International Airport in Afghanistan. AEY was recently awarded a delivery order amount of $48,717,553 on March 17, 2007 as part of the $298,004,398 contract.
Also according to the Times, when purchasing the ammunition, AEY worked with middlemen and a shell company which has been placed on federal list of entities suspected of illegal arms trafficking. Also, the Times reported that, Diveroli was secretly recorded in conversation that suggested corruption on his company’s purchase of 100 million aging rounds from Albania.
Bryan Whitman, The Pentagon’s spokesperson told reporters that suspension of the contract was due to the violation of the origin of the ammunition and the packaging of the ammunition, not the safety and performance.
“Safety and performance has not apparently been a factor, according to our folks in Afghanistan. They have had no safety incidents reported and no reports of any ammunition that has malfunctioned associated with this particular contract,” Whitman told the press.
He also denied that the issue happened because the Army awarded the contract to the lowest bidder and that he was not aware of AEY’s qualifications to fulfill the contract.
“As the United States government does business, they are obviously always trying to ensure they get the best value,” he said. “But that does not mean that, in achieving the best value for the taxpayer, that we will accept something that is below standard for what it is we are purchasing, either.”

I would prefer he became a nice Jewish doctor or lawyer rather than an arms dealer. He’s never asked for my approval on the company. He doesn’t always take my advice, I don’t influence him. As a father of a boy genius he’s hard to control. |

According to an Army official, the suspension of the contract will not have an impact on Afghanistan operations and other contractors are expressing interest into entering into a contract. “Besides, there’s no shortage of ammunition already in Afghanistan. This will have no impact,” he said.
Michael Diveroli, Efrain’s father, who originally founded AEY as a small printing business, said of his son’s career choice to CBS’ Miami affiliate, WFOR, “I would prefer he became a nice Jewish doctor or lawyer rather than an arms dealer. He’s never asked for my approval on the company. He doesn’t always take my advice, I don’t influence him. As a father of a boy genius he’s hard to control.”
Angelo Diveroli, Efrain’s grandfather said the young man frequently accompanied him to gun shows when he was younger and became an expert at weapons.
A friend of Diveroli said to WFOR, “The government came here and checked him out and gave him the contract. How do you give someone, a 21 year old kid a contract like that?”
The United States Army Criminal Investigation Command is continuing their investigation, according to officials.

“Just like they told us that our bridges were safe, they also want us to swallow that our power grid is in no danger of a system-wide, no-power-for-weeks crash”, said tenured power grid expert Donald McCormick, a senior contractor with Hydro One, an Ontario, Canada based electricity provider.
Mr. McCormick indicated that in reality though, there’s no question that the system of grids that supply power throughout the continent are in much worse shape than the majority of bridges, levees and borders in Canada and U.S. He has over two decades of experience in all aspects of power grid construction, infrastructure, maintenance, and distribution. During a recent interview, Mr. McCormick compared the ten major interconnected power regions that comprise the “North American Grid”, to a string of Christmas lights that’s been active non-stop since the 1950s. Mr. McCormick’s qualifications include being a licensed red seal interprovincial/interstate electrical engineer and he’s worked at numerous power generating stations mainly in Canada, but also across the U.S. He’s participated in building regional infrastructure related to both generation and distribution. Additionally, Mr. McCormick is Orange Level qualified as an Atomic Radiation Worker (ARW) registered in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mr. McCormick offered his candid assessment of today’s continental “power grid” by making several observations about this critical, civilization-supporting industry. His power plant experience includes both nuclear and coal, and he’s a certified expert in alternative fuel technologies such as wind, solar and hydrogen. He said that, from nuclear to coal, the majority of power generating plants operating across North America have momentous deficiencies, and the collective 10-region “power grid” has not been maintained properly (across the board) since the 1960s. Population growth has created a state in which North American power consumption is far greater than what is being yielded by current technological capacity to generate consumable energy. Mr. McCormick indicated that the infamous August 2003 blackout, in which the Northeastern U.S., Mid-Eastern U.S. and most of Ontario suffered stifling, life-interrupting blackouts, was just the beginning of something much more significant. In reference to the North American Power Grid Initiative, he said that it’s nothing more than a case of, “too little, too late”.
“You’re frequently seeing substandard parts and equipment being employed, on sites across the continent, and being used for sensitive construction projects, often related to components integral to the grid system itself. North American nuclear energy generating plants are among the worst when it comes to safety violations, not only endangering on-site employees with blatant disregard but also literally thousands of people with regard to unregulated, unnoticed pollution and waste being dumped in rivers, lakes and oceans, into the atmosphere and, more specifically, our entire ecosystem,” said McCormick.
Mr. McCormick strongly feels that another major breakdown of the grid system may occur by the end of this year, and he further stated that he’s also concerned that domestic power grid system is in grave danger of being undermined by terrorists.

In the largest study of its kind, a genetic analysis of 1,168 families with multiple cases of autism has identified genetic links to autism. A previously overlooked stretch of DNA on chromosome 11 implicates a gene called neurexin 1 and increases the evidence for the involvement of neurexins and genes related to glutamate transmission in the brain.
Genetic studies of autism have previously been undertaken; however the new study involves the collaboration of more than 120 scientists from more than 50 institutions representing 19 countries who pooled their data as part of the Autism Genome Project. The findings were published in the Feb. 18 issue of Nature Genetics.
Bob Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of autism, said: “The identification of susceptibility genes will provide profound new insight into the basis of autism offering a route to breakthroughs in new treatments in support of families.” Autism Speaks funded this project in conjunction with the U.S. National Institutes of Health.
Joachim Hallmayer, MD, associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford and chair of the collaboration’s executive committee, explains what is next: “While promising, these results need to be followed up with more refined genetic maps to home in on other specific candidate genes. We also need to look more closely at chromosomal anomalies in large samples of children with autism.” In the paper, researchers caution that the genetic foundation of autism probably involves multiple genes and chromosomal abnormalities.
Autism affects about one in every 150 children, and the CDC has called it an “urgent health concern”. Autism is a developmental disorder which impairs social interaction, communication and features restricted and repetitive interests and activities. Twin studies and other research clearly suggest a genetic basis for the condition. Currently there is no cure for autism, but both behavioral or sensory interventions and drugs can influence the symptoms.

Intellectual property rights are the rights of his or her creative intellectual labor enjoyed exclusive rights, including patents, trademarks, copyrights and other rights. Intellectual property system gives innovators have the legal right to prevent others without the permission of the rights to use, making protection of rights of innovators, a system encouraging innovation. Intellectual property system has been implemented by countries in the world to protect innovation system.
Tool for Market Competition
Science and technology are primary productive forces, the world economy, every major development is the result of technological development to promote, whether national, or enterprise, the first to master the advanced technology, the first to innovation, who will take the forefront in the development. Intellectual property rights as the protection of intellectual innovation, has become an important means of competition in the market.
Intellectual property system gives technology innovators, brand owners in a certain period of time to enjoy the exclusive right to their intellectual products. This right can be called “legal monopoly, winner takes all.” To any other person to use their innovations, brands must be with the agreement and pay the appropriate fees.
Violation of this exclusive community will conduct a variety of legal measures of sanctions, which can effectively stop without innovators, brand owners permission to use innovation law, brand behavior, maintain innovators, brand owners stakeholders.
In order to capture the market, many international companies have increased in China’s patent portfolio. Foreign companies in China commonly used strategy is the first patent monopoly, then the standard monopoly, and then massive occupation of the Chinese market. “International brands in China, the number of patent applications based on the Chinese market, the standard supply and demand, market potential of Chinese enterprises in which large areas in which international brands will seek patent protection, so you can maximize the inhibition of the rise of domestic brands the speed. “State Intellectual Property Office Yang Tiejun, Deputy Secretary pointed out.

In recent years, becoming stronger as the awareness of independent innovation and related policies, have made the domestic trademark registration application, utility model patents, design patent applications leapt on board the world’s No. 1 position soon.
However, China’s patent system and intellectual property rights by law enforcement environment, companies will be more to create small applications for the invention and utility model patents, technological level and competitiveness with foreign companies, there is still a large gap.
At present China with independent intellectual property core technology for enterprises of only three ten thousandths, 99% of enterprises do not apply for a patent, 60% of companies do not own the trademarks; Many companies are in a “manufacturing” no “create”, the “property rights “no” knowledge “of the state, some companies even survival depend on imitation and counterfeiting. These are clear to the Chinese patent “Mishap”: quantity, poor quality, competitive patent worrying. The lack of independent core technology of many industrial status, as China’s industrial development and economic construction of the serious constraints.
The Basis of Corporate Brand
As we all know, our traditional manufacturing scale, “China” has long renowned overseas, but no doubt is a traditional manufacturing technology level is not high, lack of independent brands, hard to compete with international brand companies. In particular, a large number of processing enterprises, using relatively cheap labor in China for international brands OEM production, processing fees for modest, the lack of ability to resist risks, and, as China’s economic development, labor, rising income levels, many stickers card processing companies survive difficult to sustain. Faced strong pressure transformation and upgrading.
Leather industry as the traditional manufacturing industry is facing the same problem. Although China’s leather industry output, output ports of the world’s first, is real leather producing countries, but low value-added products, high-end market has long been monopolized by foreign brands.
Industry to sustainable and healthy development must change the mode of development, strengthen independent innovation and brand strategy to improve intellectual property rights. Brand strategy is on the trademarks, trade names (size), goodwill and other intangible assets of the investment, operation and to develop the economy, the development of industry, the development of enterprise management mechanism and competitive strategy.
Specifically, is the brand awareness, striving to well-known brand to brand promotion, and promote industrial development.
Trademark registration is the basis for the implementation of brand strategy. A good logo design does not mean that a good trademark. A good mark in the long-term use, the building has been carefully cultivate, promote, maintain and gradually formed, which are inseparable from the protection of the law. In most countries and regions in the world, the law prior to registration of trade marks are protected by the principle, the same mark, the first to apply for trademark registration to obtain trademark registration, the trademark belongs to whom, the law provided for its registered trademark legal protection.
Worth noting is that trademark protection is a regional, that in a country or region to obtain registration of the mark, only in the country or the region as a trademark protected by law, without obtaining trademark registration in other countries or regions still belongs to an unregistered trademark can not be registered trademarks of legal protection.
Some companies are accustomed to first hit the market, good market prospects see only after the registration of its trademark to apply, but to apply for trademark registration until their own often find their earlier mark has been registered by others, and caused very passive situation.
International Registration of Marks is the first step into the global market in international trade, in order to export their own brands, trademarks must be registered in the country, otherwise, can only OEM for others to do the wedding gown gives way wage, earned by only the low end of industry value chain.
China’s leather industry relies more recent years, more and more Chinese products into the international market, if the brand is registered by experience, would mean the loss of the country (region) of the market. Re-registered trademark, re-create a brand re-enter the country (region), will spend a great price.

Singapore police arrested British author and journalist Alan Shadrake one day after the launch of his book about the country’s use of the death penalty.
Shadrake, 75, was arrested on Sunday morning at a hotel in Singapore and taken into custody by police on charges of criminal defamation, in response to a complaint lodged by the city-state’s Media Development Authority (MDA) over the contents of his new book, Once a Jolly Hangman: Singapore Justice in the Dock. Separately, the Attorney-General served Shadrake with an application for an order of committal for contempt of court, accusing him of “cast[ing] doubt on the impartiality, integrity, and independence” of Singapore’s courts through his book.
Shadrake’s latest book discusses alleged “double standards” in the country’s application of the death penalty, and contains interviews with local human rights activists, lawyers, and former police officers, including retired Changi Prison executioner Darshan Singh; Singh later claimed that he had been “tricked” into the interview. In earlier media comments, Shadrake stated that he expected “trouble” but no concrete action from authorities over his book, lest they draw even more attention to its claims. Retailers took his book off shelves after inquiries by the MDA; a spokesman for the MDA stated that the book was not banned, but suggested that booksellers “seek legal advice to ensure that the books they sell do not contravene Singapore laws”.
Shadrake has written for a variety of newspapers, including The Daily Telegraph of London as well as the New Straits Times of neighbouring Malaysia. His previous book, The Yellow Pimpernels, told the tale of various attempts to escape from East Germany over the Berlin Wall. If convicted, he faces a two-year imprisonment and a fine.

Also, when chatting for the very first time with someone, don’t ask too many personal questions. Keep it light and flirty – you can get to the juicy stuff later! Most especially, you must be truthful on your profile. Don’t upload photos that aren’t representative of exactly how you look and be honest about your hobbies and way of life. You will only finish up unclear and perchance hurting people, along with making your own life quite difficult in the act! If you plan to join up with somebody, make sure it is in a public, busy place. You must always keep your wits about you.
