US Senate blocks Alaska refuge drilling

Thursday, December 22, 2005

By a narrow vote late in the evening on December 21st, 2005 the US Senate blocked opening the nation’s oil reserve in National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska . This vote delivers a victory to environmentalists and denies the Bush administration their top energy priority. Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) attached the drilling plan to a measure to fund ongoing military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. However, the Senate late last night agreed to pass the defense bill, without the drilling provision.

Two key Republicans, Lincoln D Chafee (R-R.I.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), joined Democrats in opposing the drilling. Senator Lieberman (D-Conn) said yesterday that Stevens was to blame for holding up money for the military. By including the drilling measure in the defense spending bill, it was hoped to twist the senators’ arms into voting for both provisions together in the scramble to finish the important business before the Senate’s Christmas break.

Heavy snow has caused disruption in the United Kingdom with airports and schools closed and delays on the road network.

Snowfall was highest near Worcester with 9cms of snow falling. The snow has caused hundreds of school closures and major disruption to airports with Birmingham, London Gatwick and City, Bristol and Cardiff runways closing although these have now re-opened. However the runways at Luton and Stanstead remain closed due to the bad weather.

The road network has also been affected with some snow settling and accidents occurring causing major congestion in some areas, althought gritting by the Highways Agency and local authorities has limited the effect on trunk roads and motorways.

Schools were closed in Birmingham, Solihull and Dudley, while some remained open in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, East Anglia and Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.

Drivers are being warned that driving conditions will continue to be adverse and are being advised only to travel if absolutely necessary.

Train services by Midland Mainline and Virgin as well as the London Underground are affected, with delays, reduced services and cancellations.

The overall economic effect of the snow is predicted to cost the British economy approximately £400 million due to loss of work hours.

There has also been loss of power in some areas of Wales including Abergaveny, Llandeilo and Blaenporth.

The snow fall is expected to continue into the evening but may turn to sleet in some areas. Also cold temperature tonight will mean that there is a high chance of ice forming on the road network. Up to 15 cm of snow is expected through the day in some hilly areas but wetter and milder weather is expected over the weekend.

Top Reasons To Install Window Tint In Connecticut

April 16th, 2019 | Used Cars |

byadmin

Auto window tinting is one of the most common additions owners of new and used vehicles make to their cars or trucks. One of the biggest motivations for tinting vehicles is the way that the tint enhances the way a car or truck looks. Adding tint to the windows can make a common or basic vehicle look sporty, sophisticated and unique as soon as the application is complete. However, the following points are a few of the many other top reasons to install window tint in Connecticut.

Protection for the interior of your vehicle

One of the best reasons to tint the windows of your car is for the protection it provides to the interior of your vehicle. Harsh UV rays from the sun have a negative long-term effect on materials on the inside of your vehicle such as seat covers, dashboards, air vents and even the windshield. Heat trapped inside the vehicle, as well as the fading effect that the sun has on fabrics, can speed up the wear and tear on your vehicle and make it look older than it really is.

Keep the car cooler in hot weather

During the summer and in moments of warmer weather, having tinting in your car or truck actually assists with keeping the inside of your vehicle cooler. The tint either absorbs or reflects the rays of the sun and keeps it from overheating the car. This makes spending time in your vehicle a more comfortable experience and helps to make the cooling factor of the air conditioner more effective.

Protection from harsh UV rays

Driving your car during daylight hours or sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic without tinted windows leaves you susceptible to the harsh effects of UV rays. One of the best ways to protect you and your passenger’s skin from the damaging effects of the sun is by installing tinting over your auto glass.

These are a few of the top reasons to install window tin in Connecticut. If you are ready to gain all of the benefits that having your auto windows tinted offers, visit Tint Master today to explore your options and schedule an appointment for professional installation.

Baby attacked by dog in New York

An eight-month old boy, Andrew, was attacked and killed by a Doberman pinscher in Brooklyn, New York. The dog was a three-year old named Mackabee, who is also neutered.

The grandmother was babysitting the boy. While she was in the kitchen she heard the boy scream and ran next door to a neighbor for help. The neighbor took the dog off the boy, rescued him and brought him to his house to try and perform CPR on the boy, while he called 911 for help.

Police said the baby’s head was in bad shape and the dog broke the boy’s skull. Andrew was sent to Kings County Medical.

The doctors tried to save his life by working on him for nearly an hour, but the boy died at 3:06 pm local time. The parents of the child were not home at the time of the incident. The dog was shot with a tranquilizer and was sent to a care center. The city Department of Health is investigating. The dog may have to be put down because of the incident.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the Doberman Pinscher is not frequently involved in fatal attacks on humans in comparison to several other dog breeds such as German Shepherd Dogs, Rottweilers and others.

Gatorland, an Orlando, Florida tourist attraction known for its gator wrestling shows and its conservation programs for alligators, crocodiles, and other reptiles and birds, was heavily damaged by fire on Monday morning, November 6, 2006.

The four-alarm fire was reported at 5:55am EST. The entrance building, which contains the administration offices and the gift shop, was destroyed. The only thing left standing of it was its iconic gator head front gate, whose upper jaw was almost completely charred.

At least four animals — two gators and two snakes, which were being kept near the gift shop — were feared dead. No humans were hurt. The other gators in the public display took refuge in the central pools, and were okay. The birds were in the aviary in the back, and were in no danger.

None of the attraction venues beyond the gift shop, however, were damaged. Gatorland hopes to reopen for tourists in a week, using a temporary entrance.

Orange County Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire.

Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion">
Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

April 14th, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”

Irish firm issues free energy challenge to scientists">
Irish firm issues free energy challenge to scientists

April 3rd, 2019 | Uncategorized |

Friday, August 18, 2006

Irish firm Steorn has placed an advertisement in The Economist magazine asking for 12 scientists to test their “free energy” invention.

The Dublin based firm, founded in 2000, says it has developed technology that takes a small amount of mechanical energy and returns a bigger amount, using magnetic fields. The company’s Chief Executive, Sean McCarthy, said that they discovered the technology whilst working on generators for wind turbines used to power CCTV cameras.

The company has asked for 12 physicists to help them rigorously test their invention to prove, one way or the other, whether it works as they say it does. McCarthy claims that the vast majority of the scientists they’ve directly invited to test their device have refused, which is why they’ve resorted to the advertisement.

“Free energy” is a perennial claim of con artists and inventors, one that science has constantly battled with. The idea that a small amount of energy can return a bigger amount without drawing it from somewhere breaks the basic laws of physics, specifically the laws of thermodynamics. One common claim of the free energy ‘inventor’ is that the scientific community, the government, etc. needs to publicly verify the machine works before the inventor will sell it. The logic of this is flawed, as the device would be an instant cash cow. The inventor would be able to power his home, car, and be able to sell the energy produced to others at the market price. Devices that are claimed to exhibit this behaviour are known as perpetual motion machines. The average person’s knowledge of science (or lack thereof) is a popular weak point to exploit for con men.

Easy Tips And Tricks To Maintaining Your Eyelash Extensions In Honolulu

April 3rd, 2019 | Murals |

byAlma Abell

Do you currently have Eyelash Extensions in Honolulu, and are wanting to know how to maintain them to make them last as long as possible? If so, that is understandable. Eyelash extensions are a great way to enhance your look and to cut down on the amount of time it takes to do your makeup each day. However, these extensions not exactly cheap, so wanting them to last as long as possible and have them still look great is completely normal. This article will discuss a few ways that you can maintain your extensions in between treatments.

First off, this may sound funny, but one way to help them last is to sleep on your back. Yes, that’s right. It is probably the most obvious way to do it as well. The adhesive glue that is used to apply the treatments needs to dry, so sleeping on your back for the first couple of nights can ensure that they adhere to your eyelids properly. After the first couple of nights, you can go back to sleeping in any position that you see fit. Also, exercise great care when you are doing things like washing your face or removing your make up. Even though the adhesive glue has dried, it can still come off.

Next, you should always keep them moist. This may sound weird, but if an eyelash extension is consistently dry, it can break off easier. If you notice yours starting to become dry, a quick and easy fix would be to put a dab of baby oil on your finger and apply them to the extensions. This will also keep them looking healthy and rejuvenated, rather than old and dry. Prior to adding anything to moisturize them, you should separate or comb them out as well. Also, don’t mess with them when you don’t have to.

In conclusion, as you can see, maintaining your Eyelash Extensions in Honolulu can be quite easy. All it takes are a few easy tips and tricks to follow. If you would like to purchase eyelash extensions, or would like to find out more about how to maintain the ones you have, look at more info here.
